Dive into the intersection of print and pottery in this mini ceramics workshop!
This class will cover direct and transfer printing methods for pottery including sponge and stamp decorated ware, underglaze transfer screen printing/application, and direct screen printing of slips and underglazes.
Students will have the opportunity to try these methods on one provided leather hard cylinder (your future cup, pencil holder, or candle body!) and will get to take home one sponge stamp they make in class, four 2” x 2” black underglaze transfers, and one 2” x 2” 110 mesh silkscreen stencil for direct printing.
Participants seeking to use custom artwork or choose their own for the underglaze transfer and silkscreen stencil must submit one design as an .svg by Friday March 28th at 11:59pm ct to mropp@umich.edu or Mason Opp on Slack. If a participant does not submit artwork by this deadline, a design will be chosen for them. Please no halftones at this time. If you don’t know what you’d like to make, consider checking out freesvg.org for CC licensed artwork.
This class will not cover the photo emulsion process, and does not count towards any screen printing checkoffs. Rather, it is an exciting way to test some applications of this technology.
The workshop is on Saturday April 5th, from 10am – noon, in the flex space.
The cost is $65 and includes all materials.
Full refund on or before March 28th 2025.
Ages 18+.
Members only, minimum 3, maximum 10.
Instructor contact: Mason Opp on Slack or mropp@umich.edu.
About Mason: In addition to ceramics at the Bodgery, I am interested in woodworking, turning, cnc, 3dp, and screenprinting and have been incorporating those interests into my pottery. I teach wheel throwing and I am a studio assistant at MSCR.
