Join us for a unique opportunity to make your own incredibly detailed cast iron art using the lost foam casting method! Learn creative techniques for how to build, sculpt, press, cut and burn your way to a radically unique model that will become a cast iron sculpture.
Artist Alisa Toninato from FeLion Studios will guide participants through additive and subtractive approaches to sculpting during the design and model-making process in order to get a 3D form. We’ll be cutting and gluing polystyrene & white bead foam using hot wires, wood burners and glue sticks in order to generate a unique sculptural form. Once your foam sculpture is complete, FeLion Studios will create a sand mold around your design in preparation for the artwork to be cast into iron at a big annual iron pour event called “Pour’n Yer Heart Out”, happening on February 19th, 2022 at Olbrich Botanical Gardens.
For inspiration: I encourage students to bring photos, objects, and examples of textures that they may want to replicate in the foam design process. There will be a variety of tools, textures and objects available to use during this workshop, but if you are interested in using a specific texture you like as a tool to “press” or “smash” into the foam, consider bringing something that is rigid enough and tougher than the foam itself. Polystyrene foam has some memory attributes to it, but it’s still pretty dense material, so you’ll need something made from metal or very strong plastic.
Heads up: Since we will be working with hot foam cutting for some of the sculpting methods, it can get a little stinky after a while, so we’ll do our best to provide a space with ventilation and good air flow. If you are sensitive to these smells, you are welcome to wear a respirator with organic filtration during those times.
All supplies are provided.
Ages 16 and up.
