NEW—Hollow Forms

(Please read carefully before signing up)

You must be checked-off on the lathes before taking this class!

This is an advanced turning project.

THIS IS A TWO-PART CLASS.
The second class will be held on the same evening next week.

Turning the inside below the neck of a vase or the rim of a calabash bowl involves learning additional echniques, specifically in undercutting and safely using “swan neck” hollowing carbide tools, secure workholding in a chuck, and understanding understanding supported vs unsupported turning as well as blind cuts.

In the first class, students will cut tenons, design and shape the blank, and drill the initial opening.

In the second class, students will use hollowing tools to undercut and hollow the interior of the form. Finishing will be discussed in relation to the intended purpose of the hollow form, and potential advanced concepts such as spheres and multi-axis turning will be discussed based on interest.

Part One Monday, April 20, 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm
Part Two Monday, April 27, 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm
Maximum four students per class
.
Class Fee: $135 (includes $5 for a turning blank).
Refunds available before April 18.

You’ll be using the wood lathes and both HSS and carbide turning and hollowing tools.

This class is open to intermediate woodturners interested in advancing their turning skills. If a student already has turning tools, please clear them with me before class—all tools should be sharpened before use.

Kids 13 and up are ok if they are already turning. This is not a good class for beginners, especially those under 13.

Closed toe shoes are required. Long hair must be pulled back. No exceptions.

The class meets in the Woodturning area outside of the Woodshop where the wood lathes are located.

Non-members, please arrive at least 5 minutes before class. Our buildlings are locked 24/7 and you’ll need to be let inside. As this is a 2 day class, refunds will be available 48 hours before the first class only. Please arrive on time.
