THIS IS A TWO-PART CLASS.
The second class will be held on the same evening next week.
Turning a bowl from a block of wood involves learning a series of turning techniques, including scraping vs cutting on the bevel, safe work holding in a chuck, and understanding wood grain.
In the first class, students will turn a small bowl from 8/4 lumber to learn how to advance through the process—evaluate the wood, cut a tenon to mount the bowl in a chuck, shape the outside, and start hollowing the inside. Turning from green wood will be discussed
The second class will cover techniques for completing the interior of the bowl as well as techniques to remove the tenon from the foot of the bowl. Finishing will be discussed in relation to the intended purpose of the bowl, and whether a student opts to turn green or kiln-dried lumber.

You’ll be using the wood lathes and both HSS and carbide turning tools.
This class is open to woodturners interested in advancing their turning skills. If a student already has turning tools, please clear them with me before class—gouges should be sharpened before use.
Kids 10 and up ok if they are truly interested in woodturning, but under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.
Closed toe shoes are required. Long hair must be pulled back. No exceptions.
The class meets in the Woodturning area outside of the Woodshop where the wood lathes are located.
Non-members, please arrive at least 5 minutes before class. Our buildlings are locked 24/7 and you’ll need to be let inside. As this is a 2 day class, refunds will be available 48 hours before the first class only. Please arrive on time.
