How to Turn a Wood Bowl (please read carefully before signing up)
You must be checked-off on the lathes before taking this class!
THIS IS A TWO-PART CLASS. The second class will be held on the same evening next week.
Turning a bowl from a block of wood involves learning a series of turning techniques, including scraping vs cutting on the bevel, safe workholding in a chuck, and understanding wood grain.
In the first class, students will turn a small bowl from either a green log or 8/4 lumber to learn how to advance through the process—evaluate the wood, cut a tenon to mount the bowl in a chuck, shape the outside, and start hollowing the inside.
The second class will cover techniques for completing the interior of the bowl as well as techniques to remove the tenon from the foot of the bowl. Finishing will be discussed in relation to the intended purpose of the bowl, and whether a student opts to turn green or kiln-dried lumber.
Part One Wednesday, January 10, 6:00 to 9:30 pm
Part Two Wednesday, January 17, 6:00 to 9:30 pm
Maximum three students per class . You’ll be using the wood lathes and both HSS and carbide turning tools.
This class is open to Bodgery members interested in advancing their turning skills. Kids 10 and up ok if they are truly interested in woodturning, but under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.
If a student already has turning tools, please clear them with me before class—gouges should be sharpened before use.
Closed toe shoes are required. Long hair must be pulled back. No exceptions. The class meets in the “Woodturning” part of the Shop where the wood lathes are located.
Since this is a 2 day class, refunds available till January 6th only. Please arrive on time. Please do not book the class if you have NOT done the basic checkoff class.
