This is an introductory class that will begin with a safety overview and discuss the mechanics of the lathes, work holding, preparing turning blanks, wood properties, turning tools and when to use them, and a general overview of the process before students begin turning. Students will turn a handle for a kitchen tool (selected from the assortment available at The Bodgery) using both high speed steel and carbide turning tools. Students will be checked off on operating all three of the available wood lathes at the end of class.
Sunday, August 13 from Noon to 3 pm
Maximum three students per class
You’ll be using the wood lathes, carbide and HHS tools
This class is open to Bodgery members interested in learning to turn as well as turners who would like to be checked off on operating all three of the wood lathes. Kids 10 and up ok, but under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.
If a student already has turning tools, please clear them with me before class. If a student already has a turning kit, please also clear it with me before class to make sure there is an appropriate turning blank on hand. Please note that sharpening high speed steel tools and more complex projects (such as greenwood bowls, end grain hollowing and segmented turning) will be covered in future classes.
Closed toe shoes are required. Long hair must be pulled back. No exceptions.
The class meets in the “Woodturning” part of the Shop where the wood lathes are located.
If necessary, please cancel at least 24 hours in advance since class size is limited by the equipment available. Please arrive on time. Students arriving 15 minutes or more late may need to reschedule.
