How to Turn a Wood Bowl (please read carefully before signing up)
You must be checked-off on the lathes before taking this class!
THIS IS A TWO-PART CLASS.
The second class will be held on the same evening next week.
Turning a bowl from a block of wood involves learning a series of turning techniques, including scraping vs cutting on the bevel, safe workholding in a chuck, and understanding wood grain.
In the first class, students will turn a small bowl from either a green log or 8/4 lumber to learn how to advance through the process—evaluate the wood, cut a tenon to mount the bowl in a chuck, shape the outside, and start hollowing the inside.
The second class will cover techniques for completing the interior of the bowl as well as techniques to remove the tenon from the foot of the bowl. Finishing will be discussed in relation to the intended purpose of the bowl, and whether the lumber is green or kiln-dried.
